Update: February 2018 - I have been notified by the New York City Geocaching Community that the FDR series of caches has been nominated for Best Series in NYC in 2017!! Additionally, this cache has been nominated for Best Location as well. Thanks to all that have visited so far as you a big part of this happening!

After World War I, the United States adopted a policy of isolationism and non-interventionism, having refused to endorse the Versailles Treaty (1919) or formally enter the League of Nations. Many Americans remembered the horrors of the Great War and, believing that their involvement in World War I had been a mistake, were adamantly against continued intervention in European affairs. With the Neutrality Acts established after 1935, U.S. law banned the sale of armaments to countries that were at war and placed restrictions on travel with belligerent vessels.

The Four Freedoms Speech was given to Congress on January 6, 1941. FDR's hope was to provide a rationale for why the United States should abandon the isolationist policies that emerged from World War I. In the address, Roosevelt critiqued Isolationism, saying: "No realistic American can expect from a dictator's peace international generosity, or return of true independence, or world disarmament, or freedom of expression, or freedom of religion–or even good business. Such a peace would bring no security for us or for our neighbors. "Those, who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

This series of four caches leads you from the middle of Roosevelt Island down to the beautiful 4-acre memorial park dedicated to FDR and his famous speech. During the warmer months, enjoy the "Cherry Walk" as the cherry trees will be in bloom. All year round, you will have some great views of the lower East Side of Manhattan and ultimately some wonderful panoramic views when you arrive at the park, including a view of the United Nations.

Please note that the 1st and 2nd caches (Freedom Of Speech and Freedom Of Worship) are available 24/7, however the 3rd and 4th (Freedom From Want and Freedom From Fear) are not. Please see each cache page to determine when the caches are available.

This cache IS NOT available 24/7.

This cache is located in Southpoint park. This park is open from dawn until 10PM each day. Please do not try to access the cache outside of these hours.
