Geocache Description:

Note: The cache is not at the listed coordinates.

Living in the smallest state in the country is a source of pride for many Rhode Islanders. However few people know that Rhode Island is actually much larger than a number of entire nations. This cache is the first in a series representing the world's ten smallest countries, all of which are significantly smaller than the Ocean State. These puzzle caches aren't designed to be the most difficult, but hopefully you'll learn something about each country along the way. In most cases, the information provided at the beginning of each cache page will not be particularly helpful in solving the puzzle. *Yes, this cache is technically located in Massachusetts, but it is right near the border with RI.*

San Marino

San Marino, the 5th smallest nation in the world, is also the world’s oldest republic. The 61 km2 nation, which is surrounded on all four sides by Italy, was founded in the year 301 A.D. by Saint Marinus, a Christian who fled the Roman Empire during the Diocletianic Persecution. San Marino’s independence was formally recognized by the Papacy in 1631. Since its founding, San Marino has remarkably survived each and every threat by a foreign entity to its sovereignty. In 1797, when Napoleon’s army was advancing on the region, one of the nation’s Regents befriended him, guaranteeing San Marino’s safety. Napoleon reportedly offered to allow the nation to extend its territory, but the Regents decided against such action, fearing future retaliation from other states. During the Italian unification period, San Marino became a safe haven for those fleeing persecution for their support of unification, a favor which was repaid by general Giuseppe Garibaldi, who guaranteed that San Marino would be able to remain independent of the new Italian state. Abraham Lincoln was once made an honorary citizen of the nation, and the country stayed neutral during World War I, despite Italy’s declaration of war on Austria-Hungary. Upon Mussolini’s fall from power during World War II, San Marino accepted thousands of civilian refugees. It was briefly occupied by German forces in 1944, who were later defeated in the Battle of San Marino.

San Marino is centered around Monte Titano, a 750-meter-high mountain belonging to the Apennine mountain range. Interestingly, the nation contains no significant bodies of water, and after hundreds of years of mining Monte Titano, there are also now no mineral deposits present. Its economy therefore relies heavily on banking, tourism, and manufacturing. The nation is known for its numerous mountaintop castles, which are remnants of Italy’s pre-unified network of city-states. The historic city center of Città di San Marino, as well as Mount Titano, were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.

The Puzzle

How do you feel about chemistry? Hate it? Love it? Mentally suppressed it? I personally can’t get enough of it, but I’m well aware that some people absolutely hate it. Hopefully you remember some of your high school chemistry for this puzzle. Nothing all that difficult (especially if you still know your methyl from your methane). If things are still a bit fuzzy, and you need a bit of a refresher, this site could be of some use: https://www2.chemistry.msu.edu/faculty/reusch/virttxtjml/nomen1.htm

But anyway, to the puzzle! You’ll find the cache at N 42 AB.CDE W 71 FG.HIJ
