The Long Lake area was established as a summer vacation destination circa 1930's. Most of the homes were of the summer cottage variety and during the summer folks from cities such as Cambridge, Somerville, Watertown, Medford, etc would spend the summer at their lake cottages enjoying all the lake activities. About circa 1960 many cottage owners "winterized" their cottages and moved permanently to Littleton.
My memories of growing up in Littleton during the 50/60's was so different as compared to today. The norm was to be outdoors. At the time television was just evolving with only 2-3 channels to watch, so there was little reason to stay indoors. Parents would encourage their children to go outside, make friends and play. So we did. We played baseball, explored, swam, fished, built forts, went sledding or just hung out
The Outlet
Back in the day, The Cove's back end was only about 250 feet from the front. At that point extremely thick brush and trees seemed to prevent any penetration. The above picture was taken from where the back end once was. But, if one searched carefully there was a small brook known as The Outlet that flowed from the heavy brush. One day we decided to explore the brook and with a little effort we poled down the brook where it eventually opened up to a wonderful woodland brook. Several hundred yards in we discovered a perfect docking rock and over the next month or so we built a fort and a sturdy dam creating a nice little pool. We had created an idyllic spot. However, after a week or two we noticed the lake had risen substantially causing a bit of consternation on our behalf. Shortly after the lake quickly receded. The Dam was breached. Years later a nearby farmer and I were rehashing old times and I mention the Dam we built. He responded "it was you that built and damn dam; I was contacted by a town official to investigate the lake rise and spent hours that night disabling the dam"!! Yet another fond memory it was!. At GZ you will see 2 beaver dams in the exact spot our old dam was. How times have changed. There is a bridge that spans the brook and if you look downstream one can get a perspective as to how it once was.
