Welcome to Mandell Hill. This is a working farm managed by the East Quabbin Land Trust. Under waypoints I have provided coordinates for parking. Also located at these coordinates is a kiosk with a map of the preserve as well as explanations as to what they do with this property. Depending on what time of year you come you could see cattle or Alpacas grazing in the fields. This is a great spot for birding and it even has an elevated platform offering unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape. Bring the kids for a picnic and fun times at the platform. Mt. Wachusett is clearly visible in the East.
You are looking for a micro container hidden on a spur trail off of the main loop trail. Looking at the map at the kiosk there is a spot labeled 'rock pile.' You can also access the map at eqlt.org, go to 'our preserves' click on Mandell Hill, Hardwick and then click on the trail map link. Either way while at the property take the trail towards the birding platform and stairs over the stone wall. Then follow it towards the tree line, just as you enter the tree cover there will be a large pile of stones. About 30' after this pile there will be a mountain bike trail on your right this is the spur trail to follow. This trail takes you in a north westerly direction paralleling the edge of two distinct hay fields. As you near ground zero there will be a tree stand nearby. Hunting is allowed on the property so be aware of the seasons and wear appropriate clothing. Closer to ground zero is a large wolf tree. These are unmistakable in the forest, large, elder shade producing trees with no other trees of comparable age nearby. For whatever reason this one survived the years. The cache is a little larger than your typical bison tube. Bring a pen since unfortunately it is log only. To access the log you'll have to pull the top with some force from the bottom half. It does not screw on or off. Please be sure to replace the top until it pops back on nice and secure.
I don't know where exactly the mountain bike trail comes out. I do know that the main loop trail is an easy walk through varying terrain and habitats. I've seen large deer, heard owls and seen plenty of different bird species around the preserve. The EQLT encourages the public to use their properties. Mountain bikes, dogs and hunting are allowed. I encourage you to visit their website and learn more about this great organization. Good luck and enjoy the preserve
