Helmi Marie Ilus was a teacher at Kärdla High School for 50 years and the school principal in 1952-1966. Even though she wasn't born in Hiiumaa, she became a part of the island and the island became a part of her. In her decades spent here, she became familiar to almost every person in Hiiumaa as a teacher for multiple generations of islanders, a principal and the person to lead secular burials. As Ilus means "beautiful" in Estonian, she proudly announced "I am the only documented beautiful person here". As a geography teacher she once pulled gum out of a schoolboys mouth with a map pointer.
The Kärdla school buildings were important to Helmi throughout her life: the oldest building, near which this cache is hidden, was also her home when she worked there as the principal. When Helmi passed away in 2017, the biggest hall of the building was filled with friends and family from both Hiiumaa and the mainland.
The cache was hidden in the summer of 2020 as a commemoration for a great-grandmother by her great-grandchildren.
