English Christmas carol The Twelve Days of Christmas is a folk melody with many different variations throughout the history. It has been used as a memory-and-forfeits game, a lullaby, a nursery rhyme to teach numbers to children etc. One theory suggests that the gifts in the lyrics symbolize different aspects of the Christian faith. Others believe that it's about much older Yule celebration traditions of Northern European people. Of course, folklore and its meaning changes with time and is highly influenced by the cultural environment. In the current Western society, the 12 days of Christmas are normally considered starting with December 25 and ending with January 5 (just before Epiphany). The now-standard melody for the carol was popularized by the English baritone and composer Frederic Austin in the beginning of the 20th century, his arrangement was published in 1909.

The Twelve Days of Christmas nime all tuntakse inglise jõululaulu, mille sõnadest ja viisist on rahvapärimuses levinud küllalt palju erinevaid variante.
