Eesti Maaülikool tähistab Eesti veterinaarmeditsiini 175. aastapäeva
Sel aastal möödub 175 aastat veterinaarõppe algusest Eestis. Ühtlasi saab seda tähtpäeva lugeda Eesti Maaülikooli sünniks.
“Esimese patsiendi võttis Põhja-Saksamaalt pärit esimene Tartu Veterinaariakooli direktor ja professor Peter Jessen vastu Tartu Ülikooli peahoone kõrval paiknenud kliinikus 13. oktoobril 1848. Üheaastasel täkksälul ehk noorhobusel diagnoositi kabjapainutajate haav. Veterinaariakool asus Ülikooli tänaval esimesed kaheksa tegevusaastat, kuid siis jäid ruumid kitsaks ja koliti Narva maanteele, kus juba 1888. aastal valmis esimene väikeloomakliiniku hoone.“
Juba maikuust alates tervitavad maaülikooli linnakus möödasõitjaid kaks vitstest punutud elusuuruses hobuse kuju.

The Estonian University of Life Sciences celebrates the 175th anniversary of Estonian veterinary medicine
This year marks the 175th anniversary of the beginning of veterinary education in Estonia. This anniversary can also be considered the birth of the Estonian University of Life Sciences.
"The first patient was received by Peter Jessen, the first director and professor of the Tartu Veterinary School from Northern Germany, in the clinic located next to the main building of the University of Tartu on October 13, 1848. A one-year-old stallion, or young horse, was diagnosed with a hoof bender's wound. The veterinary school was located on Ülikoli street for the first eight years of operation, but then the premises became too small and it was moved to Narva maantee, where the first small animal clinic building was already completed in 1888."
Since May, passers-by have been greeted by two life-size horse statues woven from wicker in the campus of the rural university.
