This cache was inspired by a small series of caches placed by CarriVT, honoring some of her forefathers.
My sister pmwalk has done some genealogical research and traced our ancestry back to Gideon Walker, our 4x great grandfather, who is buried in the village cemetery in Whiting.
(The following information was gathered from wikitree.com and findagrave.com). Gideon was born in 1738. He married Rachel Foster around 1764. They settled in Coventry, RI. In 1768, they moved to Rutland, then to Clarendon, VT. Gideon was an ensign in Ethan Allen's unit, the Green Mountain Boys. They captured Fort Ticonderoga in 1775. A number of these men, including Gideon, were given land around Whiting by the government, and settled there. Gideon and Rachel moved to Whiting in 1784. They had eight children, and all six of their sons were farmers. All the farms were adjoining and located in Whiting, VT on Otter Creek. Total acreage was 1200 and it formed one of the best tracts in Addison County. Gideon passed away in 1793, in Whiting, and buried in the village cemetery. Numerous other members of the Walker family, including his sons, are buried there as well.
Gideon's brother, Daniel, married an English lady named Mary Young. Mary influenced Daniel to espouse the side of the British in the Revolutionary War. While the brothers were living in Clarendon, VT, the Committee of Safety, of which Gideon was a member, notified Daniel that because of his support of the Crown, if he was found off his farm, he would be declared an outlaw. Shortly after, Daniel and his family fled to Canada.
In 2008, a memorial plaque, showing Gideon as a Revolutionary War Soldier, was placed next to his headstone at the cemetery in Whiting by one of his descendants. It will be on your left immediately after you enter the cemetery. Feel free to look around it.
The cache is a small magnetic item placed roadside next to the parking lot for the cemetery and the church. You may need tweezers to extract the log. Please use the parking lot, as both roads can be busy. The area is usually quiet, but if muggles are around, please be stealthy.
