Nutjak Fortress is a late medieval structure rising above the Cetina River. It was built in the 15th century to protect the area west of the Cetina from Ottoman invasion, probably by order of Žarko Dražojević, prince of the Republic of Poljica. Despite offering it for sale to Venice in 1499, 1502 and 1504, he apparently retained possession of it until his death in 1508. It was conquered by the Ottomans sometime before 1513, and the people of Poljica only regained control in March 1685, at the beginning of the Morean War. In 1699, the Treaty of Karloca annexed Nutjak to Venice, while the other bank of the Cetina, along with the Čačvina fortress, remained under Turkish rule. According to Venetian sources, the Ottomans stationed a garrison of twenty to thirty lightly armed soldiers here, commanded by a dizdar (marshal), who was subordinate to the sanjak (county) of Klis and subordinate to the kadi (judge) of Imotski. The fortress soon lost its strategic importance, as a small Venetian fortress, the so-called Guardia, was built in nearby Gardun. The defensive role of the Nutjak fortress diminished after the Ottomans were expelled from Imotski in 1717 during the Second Morean War, and by the beginning of the 20th century the fortress was in ruins.

The complex is dominated by a large, circular tower. It was built partly of dressed stone blocks, bound with plaster and filled with smaller stones. In the west, the main entrance to the fortress has partially survived, measuring about 7 m long and 4 m high. Inside the fortress there is a small courtyard and several irregularly shaped buildings and rooms.

The importance of the Nutjak fortress is also evidenced by the fact that Pope Innocent VIII decided to finance its maintenance in 1492, the year of his death. Archaeological research shows that the site of the fortress was inhabited since prehistoric times. The first known description and sketch of the fortress was made in 1688 by the Venetian cartographer V. M. Coronelli.
