A pleasant walk through Epping town along easy paths.
One of the main reasons for the development and prosperity of Epping was its position on one of the main routes from London to East Anglia. Consequently, Epping emerged as an important coaching town and by 1800 there were 26 coaching inns in the town serving 25 coaches a day. Coaches would stop here and change horses and passengers would refresh themselves in one of these inns. Some of these inns have survived to this day, like The Thatched House, The George and Dragon and The Black Lion.
It became a favourite haunt of Highwaymen operating in the area with Epping Forest being an ideal place to hide. The most famous of these was Dick Turpin, who attacked amongst others royal coach parties on their way to the races in Newmarket.
If you park in the High Street, the cache is about a 1½ km walk (you might like to seek refreshment in Dick Turpin’s inn – The Black Lion).
This cache is terrain rated as approached from within the forest and
*should not be attempted*
from the road - this is unsafe.
The cache is an ammo box.
