Geocaching HQ Updates

HQ’s response to COVID-19

As the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) situation rapidly evolves around the world, the geocaching community has many questions about how the game will be impacted. Geocaching HQ will update this page with information as it becomes available. For timely updates, please also monitor our social media channels: Facebook / Twitter.

We strongly encourage geocachers to follow the most current guidance from public health authorities when choosing how to participate in activities such as geocaching. Read the Geocaching Blog for tips about how to stay connected with geocaching during these challenging times, especially if you cannot go out right now. Your health and safety are the top priority!

Mega- and Giga-Events

We are actively working with Mega- and Giga-Event organizers, who will be able to reschedule their events in cooperation with HQ.

Regular Events and CITOs

In some regions, community volunteer reviewers may suspend publishing Events and/or may disable, retract, or archive already published Events, in accordance with guidance from health authorities.

We advise hosts to consult their regional health authorities to understand the guidance regarding gatherings of people. Generally, Geocaching HQ leaves the decision to Event hosts on whether to continue hosting the Event and to attendees on whether they will participate.

We understand it can be very disappointing to miss the connections that are made at Events. But please remember that geocaching is a location-based game, and locationless Events or virtual logging of Events are not permitted by the Geocaching guidelines. HQ appreciates that the community is so strong that players want to keep in touch virtually and we encourage doing so using other online platforms.

Geocaching 20th Anniversary Celebration

New date: August 21, 2021

Due to uncertainties related to Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), Geocaching HQ is postponing the Geocaching 20th Anniversary Celebration to August 21, 2021. We look forward to welcoming geocachers to celebrate with us in Seattle next year!

Find Signal the Frog® – Locationless in 2020

New deadline: December 31, 2021

Since many Mega- and Giga-Events are postponed in 2020, we have extended the availability of this special cache through December 31, 2021. The cache page will be archived and locked on January 1, 2022.

Community Celebration Events

New deadline: December 31, 2021

We want to allow flexibility for hosts to schedule their Community Celebration Events, since this is a unique Event type. We have posted announcements on those Event pages to share the process for rescheduling. Event hosts will be allowed to host these events until December 31, 2021.

Hiding and maintaining geocaches

In some regions, community volunteer reviewers may suspend publishing new geocaches, in accordance with guidance from health authorities. More information may be found in the Regional Geocaching Policies Wiki.

In addition, reviewers will provide extra time for addressing maintenance issues on existing caches. HQ has temporarily suspended the automated emails to cache owners with low Health Score caches.

Blue Switch Day 2020

New dates: May 2 – December 31, 2020

We recognize that for many of us in our community going outside to earn this souvenir is not an option right now based on advisories from public health authorities. Due to these circumstances we decided to make the Blue Switch Day souvenir available from May 2 through December 31, 2020.

Memory Lane

New dates: June 1, 2020 to January 3, 2021

We have moved our Memory Lane souvenir challenge from a start date of Monday, April 6 to Monday, June 1. We will continue to monitor the guidance for COVID-19, as well as community feedback as we get closer to June. Our goal is to have a promotion that is both fun and safe. As such, we will continue to make any adjustments as needed so that the promotion is as inclusive as possible.

Cache In Trash Out® (CITO) – Season 1

New dates: March 1 – August 31, 2020

Cache In Trash Out® Season 1 will be extended until August 31, 2020, so that Event owners can have more flexibility on when to host their Events and so cachers can earn the Season 1 souvenir. Season 2 will remain September 1 – November 30, 2020.

Adventure Lab

New deadline: August 31, 2020

We have extended the deadline to August 31, 2020 for all Adventure Labs to go public. HQ will monitor changes over the next few months to see if further adjustments are needed. There is no need for those with Adventure Lab credits to write in to request an extension.

The deadline for all unpublished Virtual Reward 2.0 Caches to be submitted for publication is extended to December 31, 2020.
