Fur Rondezvous is about winter fun. This TB wants to travel to other annual festivals to see how people celebrate the seasons and local traditions.
The Fur Rendezvous, Fur Rondy for short, had its beginnings in Anchorage, Alaska on February 15, 1935. The festival coincided with the time that miners and trappers came to town with their yield. It started as a 3 day sports festival featuring hockey, skiing, basketball and kids dog sled racing. In 1946 the World Champion Sled Dog race debuted. Today, the festival includes car racing, carnival rides, a parade, fireworks and too many other events to name. Alaskans still come to town to sell furs and handcrafted items and the festival attracts visitors from all over the world.
In 2005, the Fur Rondy turned 70 and in 2006 it was announced that the Fur Rondy would no longer be held due to financial constraints. Only the start of the Iditarod draws as much attention and visitors and is the only other organized winter activity.
This TB is a reminder of days gone by and signifies the hope of Alaskans that the festival will live into the future. We are sure it will but possibly in an abridged form.
