About This Item

In 1957, a group of scientists at The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, MD were listening to the signal from the newly launched Soviet satellite, SPUTNIK. By measuring the Doppler shift as the satellite passed overhead and knowing where they were located on the Earth, they were able to locate and track the satellite. Then, thinking out of the box, they decided that if they knew the exact location of the satellite, they could determine where they were located anywhere on Earth. The satellite navigation program was born and APL continues to work in this area today.
