This coin is dedicated to the memory of my great-grandmother Bertha "Maw" Hicks.
The summer I was 15 Maw went home after surgery and I stayed with her in her little apartment for a few weeks. Maw loved kittens and she loved her grits, lol. I'll never forget taking her grocery shopping during those weeks (she was well into her 80s), especially one particular day. She pointed out a box of grits on the shelf and told me in her Texas twang, "Now honey, don't you never buy them grits right there. Never!"
"Why not, Maw?"
She glanced over her shoulder, edged closer to me and lowered her voice, "Cause they got worm poo-poo in 'em!"
I looked closely at the box to read "Grits with bacon bits" :-D
I wasn't about to correct her though, lol, I just helped her get the ones she wanted as well as packs of her favorite sweet "Dunkin Sticks" and took her home.
We lost Maw to colon cancer the following year (1986)
