<~~~~~> This coin was given to me from N9TDC. I found it very late one night in a private cache. I love Russian nesting dolls & I think all three parts of this coin are so beautiful! <~~~~~> Russian nesting dolls are also called matryoshka dolls, babushka dolls or stacking dolls. They are the most popular Russian national souvenir. Their wide fame was won by amusing, cheerful, Russian matryoshka nesting dolls being found at large exhibitions, fairs, the festivals held in different counties around the world from the land of legends and fairy tales. <~~~~~> The first Russian nesting doll was born in 1890 in the workshop "Children's Education" in Moscow. The reason that Russian wooden dolls within smaller dolls were then called matryoshka is that in old Russian among peasants the name Matryona or Matriosha was a very popular female name. Scholars say this name has a Latin root "mater" and means "mother". This name was associated with the image of of a mother of a big peasant family who was very healthy and had a chubby figure. ;-) <~~~~~> Subsequently, it became a symbolic name and was used specially to image brightly painted wooden figurines made in a such way that they could taken apart to reveal smaller dolls fitting inside one another. It's hard not to fall in love with these portly families! <~~~~~>
