Hi, my name is Oliver the Otter!
I’ve really enjoyed visiting Scotland,
but am missing my home in
Monterey Bay, California, and
the tasty abalone I get to eat there!
Please help me get back. I’d love to
visit some other forths, bays and
estuaries along the way, too.
Thanks!
The sea otter (Enhydra lutris), native to the coasts of the North Pacific Ocean, is a marine mammal and the heaviest member of the weasel family.
Its fur is the densest in the animal kingdom averaging one million strands of hair per square inch. This characteristic nearly led to its extinction through the fur trade beginning in the 1740s. During this time sea otter numbers were reduced from 300,000 to 1,000.
Today, due to international bans on hunting, conservation efforts, and reintroduction programs the species is gradually recovering and has now reached an estimated 107,000 individuals.
Sea otters are considered a classic Keystone Species, a species which affects an ecosystem more profoundly than their size and numbers indicate. For instance they are able to help keep the population of certain destructive herbivores in check - such as the sea urchin which can destroy a kelp forest if left unchecked.
