She came to us in December 1995 romping with the zest of life that only a puppy can have. With only one "accident" she seemed to find soiling in the house distasteful on her own conclusions. Her sleek coat shone in the sun, each hair displaying the beauty of her movement. She used her voice "talking " to people (and sometime interrupted if her point wasn't addressed immediately) but she never used her voice in anger. Hiking and swimming were her favorite things, although sadly it's been years since she's been able to enjoy either.
Two years ago, a friend gifted her with a special chew stick. She proudly pranced around the house with the chew stick helf aloft. After some research, she selected a place behind some plants near the fireplace. She never chewed on it or even licked it. Perhaps it was her IRA. But almost daily she'd check on it to see that it was secure, just as any good investor would do.
She had a unique relationship with each of her canine sibs. She willingly submitted to the reign of our bossy little Pomeranian, Chanca. We think we saw her smile a couple of times when she went over to lick the top of her head to soothe one of Chanca's outburst. It took a long time for Sterling to accept her into the family but when he did they bonded as inseparable hiking buddies. She made Wally feel it was his new home after Mom died in 2000. Her special buddy was Comet, another rescue golden retriever. Comet came to us broken and fearful. Comet grew strong and confident winning most of the hide and seek games in the bushes. You might say Reenie brought her back to life, serving as her playmate and confidante when all the trust in a happy life had gone out of Comet's awareness. Now, Reenie is the last.
We'll always remember her joyous yelps on celebratory days. And, we'll always remember the healing powers of her warm muzzle on sad days.
She didn't have the talents of guide dogs or know a lot of "tricks." But she embodied the love and loyalty that surpassed all of those things. She knew we loved her too.
We said good bye to our sweet, gentle Reenie at 11:20 AM on January 3, 2011.
Wendy gave us a Rainbow Bridge geocoin. It will go out in Reenies honor to travel all the trails that she never got to experience.
Have a good time hiking and swimming, Sweet Girl !!
