Kuldiga Town Garden Coin

ENGLISH
The Kuldiga Town Garden
The park which nowadays is called „The Town Garden” is situated in the oldest part of the town, in the place of the former German Order castle. Very little is left from the castle built in 1242 and stone walls surrounding it.
The formation of the town garden as a recreational area was begun in 19th century 60s. Later it developed as a popular recreational area for local inhabitants and guests with greenery and historical architectural elements.
At the beginning of 20th century on the hillock above castle ruins there was built a small, round pavilion with a view at the Venta waterfall. Both hillocks were joined by a beautiful arched bridge which used to be a favourite lovers’ meeting place. Unfortunately neither the bridge nor the pavilion have been preserved till nowadays.
During the interwar period there was a cafe with open terraces and an open-air stage with a dance floor  used for open-air parties which were very popular among townspeople. Citizens of Kuldīga had the opportunity to enjoy also other activities there, such as theatre performances and sports competitions. In those days the park was surrounded by a high fence  and at the entrances into the park there used to be small tables where entrance tickets were sold. An interesting fact is that visitors themselves decided how much they would pay for the event.
Today you can see 22 stone and bronze sculptures in the park made by a famous Latvian sculptress Līvija Rezevska.

LATVIAN
