Due to the sad and frequent loss of geocoins, due to various factors:-

Loss of coin or misplaced in the bottom of a bag

Theft by coin collecters

Muggled and stolen caches

Final pickup by newbies who then stop playing the game

We are trying something new with these wooden replicas. In the case of loss, they can be duplicated with just a little effort.
