About This Item

This is an pre-decimal one penny and a ha'penny coins

The Old Penny , was in circulation from the early 18th century until February 1971, Decimal Day.  Twelve pence made one shilling; the penny was therefore  1⁄240 of a pound. 


The  Old Halfpenny was worth 1/480th of a pound sterling At first in its 700 year history it was made from silver but as the value of the pound declined, the coin was made from base metals. It was finally abandoned in 1969 as part of the process of decimalising the British currency.
