We dropped John's World at Madame Island, at the mouth of the Charente river.
This island can be reached by foot at low tides, when the passage is not covered by sea.
From Here we can see the Iron Belt, which is the defensive set of fortified castles around the mouth of the Charente river.
These fortresses were built on the islands around the estuary: Oleron Island, Aix Island, Madame Island, and other on the coasts. The defensive design is an idea of Vauban.
All this set of fortresses was built to protect the Rochefort arsenal and shipyards at the late XVII and XVIII century.
At Rochefort was built the ship Hermione, on which La Fayette boarded to to join Washington in Boston in 1780.
A replica of The Hermione was re-built in the arsenal from 1997 to 2014.
