About This Item

Helgoland

Helgoland is Germany's most distant island from the mainland. The North Island is located in the German Bight and is divided into lower, middle and upper country. Since 1721, the neighboring island Düne is separated from her. The island name is often associated with the Low German word for "holy land" identified, others suspect the same root as holm.

Heligoland and the uninhabited neighboring island dune form the official free community of Helgoland in the district of Pinneberg, in Schleswig-Holstein. This is indeed part of the German economic area, but neither one of the customs territory of the European Union [3] nor to the German tax territory.

To the population make different sources have different information: according to official statistics, about 1,150 North (in 2010), according to local government around 1500.
