Have you ever gone to a geocache and wondered if the trackables were actually there? Will it be another day of finding some caches with their coins in them and some with missing coins? So instead of being frustrated about it I've decided to release an alternative to Schrödinger's Cat by releasing a Monster in a Box that can nip the fingers of geocachers who don't log trackables properly!!
This coin's simple mission is to keep on travelling with accurate logs and meet up with cachers and hopefully a few cats too!
Photos of the coin's adventures would be super and would go some way to proving its own existence!
However, the monster in the box is not as patient as Schrödinger's cat and will eat any geocachers who fail to move it along within two weeks - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!
Apparently the original coin did the job on a cacher who didn't move it on. Nine months ago it was taken and never placed again.
It WAS antique gold finish to a black geocoin measuring 42 x 29 mm that depicts a box with the lid partially open to reveal two orange eyes! This trackable provides a unique icon on your inventory and is launched inside a plastic wallet accompanied by a small laminated card outlining its mission for those geocachers who don't have instant internet access out in the wilderness - and yes, we do exist!!
Now for the history/science lesson . . . . . . Schrödinger was an Austrian Physicist who created a thought experiment to try to illustrate a problem with quantum mechanics. A cat was put into a box and a device was hooked up to measure the decay of a radioactive atom. Depending on if the atom decayed, the device would release a gas affecting the cat. Schrödinger postulated that until the cat was observed by opening the box, it was in a indeterminate state (neither affected or unaffected by the gas). Only when the box was opened and the cat observed would the true determination of its state be made. Science fiction author, Robert Heinlein came up with another twist to the experiment. He said that cats are capricious and they may end up deciding they don’t want to wait around to find out out what happens and may just leave the box themselves. (From the book Cat who walks through Walls) This is very similar to the state of geocoins in a cache. The cache can list the trackables on the website, but until you actually get out to a cache it's impossible to make an accurate determination if the coins are actually in there.
After all, if they're not in the box and a geocacher screams in the forest, and no-one is there to hear her . . . . but George Berkeley's philosophical question may well be the basis of another trackable!!
