Prickly would love to visit his sea urchin friends in Campbell River and then go to Bella Coola!
Sea urchins are colourful animals, with spherical bodies encased in hard shells completely covered in sharp spines. The largest ones can grow to the size of dinner plates! Sea urchins belong to a group of animals called "echinoderms"—literally "spiny-skinned". They use their spines as stilts to crawl over the sea bottom and can be found on most rocky shorelines in British Columbia, just below the tide line. They prefer to live on rocky ground with lots of their favourite foods: seaweeds and kelp. Sea urchins have no visible eyes or legs, but jaws on their bottom surface have five sharp teeth for eating plants. Sea urchins don't need to be close to one another to reproduce, because they spawn—releasing eggs into the water where they are fertilized by sperm. Sea urchin spawning in southern B.C. peaks between June and September.
