About This Item

smiley Congratulations you have found the Italian Job 25th Anniversary Scotland Coin

This Scotland Coin is one of a special set of 25 coins released worldwide to celebrate

the Italian Job 25th Anniversary Charity Mini Run.

So what’s it all about then, this Italian Job?

Well way back in 1990 a group of young Mini loving chums met in a pizzeria in Hove (England) and decided they’d had enough of the slap dash mad hack across Europe that was otherwise known as the Beaujolais run. Some had participated the previous edition and whilst enjoyable, they felt as though the whole thing had been rushed and they hankered after doing something a little more at their own leisurely pace. Over a second bottle of delicious Italian wine the formula for that is now known as the Italian Job was developed and the JOB was on!

The idea and premise of the Italian Job event is almost as simple as the design of the original Mini was. Based loosely on the plot of the 1969 movie of the same name, participants in the modern day self preservation society would require Minis, plenty of time and a determination to drive across Europe to Italy to raise as much money as they could for the nominated children’s charities. Unlike our predecessors though, this Italian Job would not lead to Minis out performing police cars roaring through crowded city centre streets. Participants would decorate their cars with sponsors messages and logos, organise fundraising events around their participation, twist the arms of friends and family and anyone else who would listen, just to raise as much as they could.

Travel to Italy is independent though all organised, as is accommodation which typically takes in good quality hotels at each pit stop. A fully equipped service barge accompanies the teams across Europe and step in whenever a mechanical emergency rears it’s ugly head.

It was quickly decided that any car which featured in the film could participate, though clearly the Mini was the most popular choice. Over the years there have been all manner of E-types, Aston Martins, a Lamborghini Miura, a clutch of Alfa Giulia’s, an exotic Fiat Dino Coupe, long wheel base Landrover Defender and a London Taxi. In 2001 the new MINI arrived and it was welcomed into the rank and file of the Italian Job and today we see a healthy split between old and new.

Since 1990 the Italian Job has run annually and to date has raised around 2.5 Million pounds for children’s charities across the UK and further a field. The event has taken in cities such as: Rome, Florence, Venice, Turin, Milan, Monza, Modena, Bologna, Trento, Paris, Lausanne, Nice, Geneva, Berne, Dijon, Lyon, London and Brighton to name but a few.

To the initiated, the Italian Job is one of the ultimate in what is known as Social Motoring Events. To the uninitiated, the Italian Job is waiting to educate you on the joys of trans European driving and fundraising for children’s charities with a big smile on your face.
