Als Bollenhut wird ein Strohhut bezeichnet, der seit etwa 1800 zur Tracht der evangelischen Frauen in den drei benachbarten Schwarzwalddörfern im Ortenaukreis gehört. Die drei Dörfer gehörten zum Herzogtum Württemberg und waren damit seit 1534 evangelisch, die anderen Gemeinden des Kinzigtals blieben katholisch. In den drei armen Dörfern wurde die Hutmacherei zur Arbeitsbeschaffung eingeführt.
Mit seinen aufgesetzten Bollen aus Wolle wurde der malerisch aussehende rote Bollenhut zu einem Symbol des gesamten Schwarzwaldes, obwohl er dort an sich nur in einem relativ kleinen Gebiet verbreitet ist.

The Bollenhut is a straw hat that has been part of the traditional costume of Protestant women in the three neighbouring Black Forest villages in the Ortenau district since around 1800. The three villages belonged to the Duchy of Württemberg and had therefore been Protestant since 1534, while the other communities in the Kinzig valley remained Catholic. Hat-making was introduced in the three poor villages to provide employment.
With its attached woollen bolls, the picturesque-looking red bollen hat became a symbol of the entire Black Forest, although it is only widespread in a relatively small area.
