I like to explore geocaches related to aquatic life, especially at beaches, islands, marshes and estuaries - but since bull sharks can be found far upriver and there are fresh water sharks in lake Nicaragua geocaches near most any body of water can be considered fair game.
Examples some sites I would like to visit include: Boston Aquarium, Woods Hole, and Cape Cod, MA; VIMS (Virginia Institute of Marine Science); Monterey Bay Aquarium, Sea World, Scripps Oceanographic Institute in La Jolla CA; Mangroves or Sea World in Florida.
However, I'd like to visit geocaches at some of the smaller places on the way, including parks and nature preserves that have wetlands, lakes, rivers, and streams; marsh sites are where immature sharks, skates, and rays hatch and develop; beaches and sand bars where young sharks find small prey. Sites related to boating and sailing are also acceptable, especially those near launch sites for fishing, snorkeling, SCUBA diving, reef exploration, and even whale watching. Geocaches near aquariums, science museums, nature parks and preserves, and even libraries where people can learn about aquatic life are also great choices.
The movie Jaws made everyone nervous to jump in the water in 1975. Sharks are amazing creatures. They have changed little over millenia. They are an important part of marine ecosystems. Populations have suffered directly from overfishing and mercury poisoning, as well as indirectly from loss of prey due to over-fishing. Bull sharks are one of the few species that can travel in both salt and fresh water, and in shallow water. It's possible that when fish stocks get low, start heading up river looking for new sources of food. No matter how amazing they are, I would prefer that they didn't decide to nibble on me.
Much of the filming was done in Martha's Vineyard, MA. To visit it, you can catch a ferry from Woods Hole in Falmouth, MA. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is a private, independent, not-for-profit research facility. I had a friend who's dad worked there when I was growing up. At show-and-tell he brought in large styrofoam cup that had been taken to the depths in their submersible and crushed by the pressure into a small hard foam version of its former self.
I swam once with some shy leopard sharks in La Jolla, CA. It is a fascinating experience to snorkel and dive, but always stay safe and don't try to hand-feed wild creatures.
