Het Atomium is gebouwd in het kader van de Brusselse Wereldtentoonstelling in 1958, de zogenaamde Expo 58. Het is een monument in het Heizelpark in Brussel. Het is een stalen constructie die bestaat uit negen bollen met elk een diameter van 18 meter. De bollen vormen samen het kubisch ruimtelijk gecentreerde kristalstructuur van ijzer. Dit is 165 miljard maal vergroot. Het gebouw werd ontworpen door ingenieur André Waterkeyn en is sinds de restauratie bekleed met roestvast staal. Vijf van de negen bollen zijn toegankelijk voor het publiek.
The Atomium was built in the context of the Brussels World Fair in 1958, known as Expo 58. It is a monument in the Heysel Park in Brussels. It is a steel construction consisting of nine spheres each having a diameter of 18 meters. The spheres form the spatially centered cubic crystal structure of iron. This is enlarged 165 billion times. The building was designed by engineer André Waterkeyn and since the restoration lined with stainless steel. Five of the nine spheres are open to the public.
