The mission of this trackable is to travel the world, be discovered, and spread awareness about brain tumors.
My whole life I dreamt of becoming a nurse, but when I was fourteen I thought my plans might be derailed forever. I became very ill. I had a headache the was unbearable pain, all I could do was sleep - nothing took the pain away. I had double vision constantly - I remember being in the passenger seat of a car cringing, because I thought we were going to hit a mailbox - it looked like it was in the middle of the street. I was constantly passing out. I only tasted, and smelled metal it was awful. But, the only symptom the doctors ever looked at was that I was throwing up constantly. In a span of three months I had lost over thirty five pounds from not being able to keep anything down that I ate. Doctors thought "she's fourteen, its deffinety an eating disorder or she's depressed" and wrote me off. I wasn't suffering from an eating disorder, nor was I depressed - I was afraid I was dying at fourteen. After visiting a hospital, a doctor, and urgent cares over 30 times from August 2009 - November 18, 2009 my mom took me back to the community hospital. We waited over 8 hours before they finally called my name to be seen. A physicians assistant by the last name Wilson listened to all my symptoms, and said "well, if you're having a headache let's get you in a CT machine and make sure nothing's going on." I felt like something was wrong while they were taking the pictures, because they kept saying just one more picture and it kept going on. They wheeled me back to the room, and my mom and I waited for the physicians assistant to come back into the room. When he arrived he said "I'm sorry to tell you this, but we've found a mass the size of a grapefruit on your brain." It was scary, but in a way I was relieved because I finally had an answer as to what was happening to me. I was transported to Dayton Children's hospital, and was taken into surgery just a few hours later that lasted over thirteen hours. Though they didn't get it all the first time, and it started to regrow when I was sixteen, and I had to have a second surgery and radiation treatment- I feel as if physicians assistant Wilson saved my life that day by listening to all my symptoms, and not stereotyping me into a specific category because of my age and gender. So, please if your a doctor, a nurse (like I am now), or work in any way shape or forum of healthcare look at the symptoms not the person.
Childhood brain tumors/cancer has now surpassed the number of children with leukemia. Brain Tumor/cancer is the number one cause of cancer death in pediatric patients. Find a cure, grey matters!
