All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts, From As You Like It. by William Shakespeare.
Joe's Bar sees many dramas played out. Some good, some bad, some pretty funny. The other night an older gentlman came in sat at the corner of the bar. He ordered a beer and a burger and quietly sat and ate. Dave, a regular, was sitting nearby and began a conversation. Initally, Mr. Oleski, as we learned, was reserved. But he had a couple more beers and soon was telling stories of his life. He grew up in Cleveland, OH. His parents were imigrants from Poland. As a kid he worked in his parent's store. He was just out of high school when WW 2 began. He enlisted in the Army. He walked across Europe carring an M1. Some of the stories he told about his service time were funny, others sobering. He was there when a Concentration Camp was liberated. It was not pretty. After the war he went to college and became an engineer. He designed water systems, and sewer systems. Things we don't see, but now could not live without. He raised a family and lived modestly. He stills lives in the house he bought with his wife. She's now deceased. His children are spread around the country. He has no complaints. "Don't take life too seriously. No one get's out of it alive," is his philosophy.
