There were 240 of these pre decimal Pennies to the £1.

However they were extremely useful in their day.

They paid for access to public toilets, hence, “spend a penny”

Actual uses were so numerous there are too many to list here.

A one penny bus ticket paid for a ride over a number of stops.

This penny therefore wants to travel as far as possible for free.
