About This Item

I found these building blocks a few years ago during a trip to Japan.  Now, every time I go back to Japan I end up bringing a big box of them home with me.  I have found a few online retailers in the United States who sell them, and occasionally run across them in specialty toy stores.

LaQ, or Japanese Legos as my kids like to call them, are simple, yet highly creative construction toys which offer an infinite possibility of creation from just 7 types of block parts (2 base parts and 5 joint parts).  The "Q" in LaQ is for the Japanese word "kyuu" which means sphere, and LaQ is completely unique in how the blocks can create spherical geometric shapes using a minimum number of parts.  Visit www.laq.co.jp for more information about these fascinating building blocks.

Inside the travel bug are two 5 yen coins.  The Japanese for "five yen," go en, is a homophone with go-en, "en" being a word for causal connestion or relationship, and "go" being a respectful prefix.  As a result, five-yen coins are commonly given as donations at Shinto shrines with the intention of establishing a good connection with the deity of the shrine, and is widely believed it is best to insert a single five-yen coin into a new wallet before inserting any other money. (Information taken from Wikipedia website - 5 yen coin).
