About This Item

The Hurlu is a character of the mouscronnois folklore (city of Mouscron, Belgium).

A long time ago, the mouscronnois were all very Catholic. But people became Protestants and decided to try to spread their other religion to Mouscron.

These people took refuge in Mont-à-Leux (district of Mouscron). They were bandits who attacked people, who were flying, who were screaming (this is how they were called Hurlus because they are howlers).

In 1582, the Hurlus left Mouscron to attack the city of Lille.

So many years later, the Hurlus festival celebrates this departure of the Hurlus in another city. They are celebrated every year in Mouscron the first weekend of October.
