The mission of this state flag is to travel around the world.
The state flag of Delaware is steeped in references to the colonial era in which Delaware was one of the thirteen original colonies and later became first to (sign) ratify the Constitution of the United States. Delaware is literally and undisputedly “The First State”.
The Delaware flag consists of a field of colonial blue which serves as the setting for a buff colored diamond. The state's coat of arms is displayed within the diamond. The coat of arms depicts early symbols representing shipping, farming, hunting and cattle ranching.
Beneath the diamond and the coat of arms is the date, December 7, 1787. This is the date that Delaware became the first state to ratify the Constitution and the first state of a new nation.
The flag’s colonial blue field represents the colors of a blue uniform worn by General George Washington. The buff colored diamond is a reference to an early state nickname, "The Diamond State", so given because Thomas Jefferson compared Delaware's small size and great value to that of a diamond, evidenced in its geographical position on the Atlantic Ocean and its leadership contributions.
