About This Item

Kompass

Compass
The compass (from Italian compasso "circle, magnetic needle", derived from compassare "stepping off") is an instrument for determining a fixed direction, z. B. compass direction, navigation course, bearing direction. Originally, the compass in shipping supplemented other methods of navigation, such as sun, stars and landmarks, currents, waves and water depth. The oldest version of the compass is the rear sight, which allows the pole star to be sighted on a clear night. The classic device is the magnetic compass, which uses the earth's magnetic field to determine the magnetic north direction and from there all other cardinal directions. Other versions are electronic compasses based on Hall sensors or fluxgate magnetometers; with the latter, the magnitude and direction of the earth's magnetic field can be accurately determined to a 1 / 100,000 of the absolute value. Without the use of the earth's magnetic field, gyrocompasses work whose mode of operation is based on the Earth's rotation. The direction measurement takes place with respect to the geographic north-south direction instead of the magnetic poles. There are also gyro instruments without directional reference (free gyros such as the gyros), which, however, must be adjusted periodically. Also without magnetic field sun compasses come out. A compass with direction finder is also called Bussole. Usually this term is used in the measurement technology for precision bearing compasses, but especially in Austria and Italy, the simple walking or marching compass is so called.
