This trackable is dedicated to my mate Harald. He informed me recently of the alternative names and origins of the humble thong. Thongs are a significant part of world culture. ‘Flipflop Day’ is celebrated, of course, on the first day of Summer. At the Sydney Olympics Kylie was carried into the stadium on a giant rubber thong. Fans of thongs include the Dalai Lama and Barak Obama.
Slops (South Africa – also known as visplakkies)
Flipflops (US, UK, Ireland)
Jandals (NZ - a short form of Japanese sandals)
Thongs (Australia - not to be confused with underwear)
Pluggers (Australia - making reference to the knobby rubber pushed through the base)
Step-ins (Philippines)
Slippers (the Caribbean)
Go-aheads (origin unknown).
