BUDDY, the First Seeing Eye Dog
BUDDY represents the first American Seeing Eye Dog. Back in 1927, after World War 1, an American woman named Dorothy Eustis, loved and trained German shepherds. They were smart, eager to please, patient and capable of learning complicated tricks and tasks. She found out that German shepherds were being trained in Germany to be Guide Dogs for veterans who had been blinded in the war. She envisioned training dogs to help all blind people. She set up the first American guide dog school. Her first pupil was a German Shepherd named Buddy.
Dorothy’s idea was a good one! Nowadays, there are thousands of guide dogs of many different breeds assisting blind people in their everyday lives. There is a close bond of trust and love that grows between an owner and his/her dog.
This Buddy is eager to get out on the road, see new places and meet new handlers. He would especially like to meet other dogs. The Owner would LOVE photos of your adventures! Have fun!
