Current Goal

Hi, my name is Laika, and I'm named after the first dog to orbit the earth. I'm not going into space, but I would like to roam the earth. I started my journey on June 25th 2024 in GC40. The oldest cache jou can log on continental Eurpe.

Will you show me the most beautiful places on earth?

About This Item

On November 3, 1957, the Russians launched the artificial satellite Sputnik II. There was a dog named Laika on board. The quadruped became the first animal to orbit the earth alive. Animals had been sent into space before during space programs, but none had completed a full orbit. Laika would not survive the historic space journey.

Three-year-old Laika was taken off the streets of Moscow especially for the project. Her name is derived from the Russian word for “barker”.

Before her special journey, Laika underwent several operations so that sensors for heart rate, blood pressure and breathing could be installed. She was trained to survive in increasingly smaller spaces. In addition, the dog was occasionally spun in a centrifuge so that she would get used to changes in gravity and she was taught to accept food in jelly form, which was easier to administer in space.

On November 3, 1957, the dog was placed in Sputnik and then launched into space from the launch pad at Baikonur. It was already known in advance that Laika would not survive the space journey, although the Soviets suggested for some time that the intention was to get the dog back to earth alive. However, Sputnik II was not designed for a return to Earth at all.

Nearly two weeks after launch, it was announced by Soviet authorities that Laika had suffocated. About ten days after launch, partly due to lack of oxygen. After this, the artificial moon would orbit the Earth for almost five months, before finally burning up in the atmosphere on April 14, 1958.

In 2002, decades later, Russian scientist Dimitri Malashenkov announced that Laika died much earlier, namely five to seven hours after launch. She is said to have died of overheating and stress before completing the fourth orbit. During the launch, the animal's heart rate is said to have tripled.

Space dogs Laika was the first so-called space dog. Three years later, the Russians sent two dogs into space again: Belka and Strelka. Unlike Laika, they did return to earth alive.

This was my first time in London in over 10 years and I had solved a number of caches in advance including Taiwan, this was the first trackable Ive ever encountered, and its very cute indeed, will put it in a local cache to me as soon as possible
