Southeast Iowa is known world wide for its natural treasure, the Geode. Perhaps rather plain on the outside, Geodes open up to reveal their sparkling inner Quartz Crystal beauty to all that take the time to search out this outdoor gem of Iowa. I'm starting my journey in Hawaii to visit another rock, the lava rock but someday would like to return home to Southeast Iowa.
The word Geode is derived from the Greek or Latin word Geo meaning earth-like or earth-shaped because of their rounded spherical shape. Most crystal type Geodes have bumpy, cauliflower-like surface textures, with inner linings of various crystal and mineral inclusions. Up to 20 different mineral inclusions have been discovered inside including Pyrite, Calcite, Dolomite, Aragonite, Malachite and many more. Geodes can range in size from ¼ to over 3' in diameter and can weigh over 400 lbs.
