Current Goal

To travel as far and wide around the United States of America as possible - until the year 2046!

About This Item

This travel bug arrived in the USA on the 1st November 2006 accompanied by Matt Wallace from Nottingham, England - home of Robin Hood.

The Nottingham Roosevelt Memorial Travelling Scholarship Trust was established on 5th November 1946 by the Lord Mayor of Nottingham, Francis Carney, after discussions with Dwight D Eisenhower on 20th October 1945. The objective was to recognise the great services rendered to the Nation by the late Franklin Delano Roosevelt as President of the United States of America during the Second World War and to perpetuate a local tribute to his memory by founding the Scholarship.

The object of the Scholarship is to promote study and to obtain further education and in particular an understanding of the history and way of life of the American people. Each year, scholarships are granted to young men and women from Nottingham, to enable them to visit the United States of America.

Matt Wallace was one of 2 scholars for the year 2006. Emily Shelton also visited the USA this year.

Matt took the opportunity to set up the Robin and Roosevelt travel bug to act as a permanent travelling virtual scholar in the USA. The hope is that finders of this travel bug will learn a little bit about the City of Nottingham where every scholar comes from. The year 2046 will be the 100th anniversary of the Scholarship.

If you find this travel bug we'd love to see pictures of it and where it's ended up. Please also check the log below before moving him on. He doesn't want to back track and is keen to cover some distance!

What an honor to grab this one. Birdin' has served four times as a Delegation Leader for People to People trips, in which kids travel to other countries to represent the US and learn about life elsewhere. This program was also founded by Eisenhower. It will be my pleasure to move this one along, and much easier than shepherding 35 teenagers around London ever was!
