About This Item

The Church of Lakeuden Risti at Seinäjoki, Finland

* Did you know that the architect Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), one of the world's most famous Finns and one of the most prominent names of modern architecture in modernism, had been born and spent childhood in Southern Ostrobothnia at Kuortane eight. Although much of Alvar Aalto lived elsewhere in Finland and abroad, the south-eastern nature, traditions and nature have left a mark on his art. A good example is the Aalto Center in Seinäjoki, which comfortably glows with willpower in the middle of the southern Ostrobothnian descent.

* Did you know that the Seinäjoki administrative and cultural center, nowadays called Aalto Center, consists of six different buildings: the church of Lakeuden Risti, the town house, the Aalto Library, the congregation center, the state office building and the theater. The buildings were completed in a few decades, vv. 1960 - 1987. The Civic Society, which was completed in 1988 and joins the Aalto Center, is also a masterpiece of majesty. It could be said that the people at Seinäjoki are very lucky because the Aalto Center in Seinäjoki is the only building complex in the world that was built in full according to Alvar Aalto's plans three!

* Did you know that when a general competition was held in Seinäjoki in 1951 on the planning of the church, involving 45 architects, Alvar Aalto's proposal was considered to be superfluous compared to others. Then, in Seinäjoki, the center of the new diocese was planned, and one of the conditions for competition was that the church could act as a main church of the diocese. However, the bishop's seat was placed on Lapua, but Seinäjoki got a magnificent church and a tall bell tower (65 m) so it would certainly be visible from the Lapua.

* Did you know that when designing the Aalto Center, Alvar Aalto used a lot of different elements and symbols. They include, for example, blue color, light and number, which occur in various forms both inside and outside buildings. For example, the facade of the city's house is coated with glossy dark blue ceramic clinker wheels that, in different years and days, reflect different colors. The naval aristocracy's facade on the facade of the church has been highlighted in the blue color of the ultramarine in the background of a small organism. The Aalto Library's  “Blueberry bulbs” are dark blue. The power of light and blue color is especially visible on windows of buildings. For example, the window grilles of the library and the city hall, as well as the high windows of the church, give a beautiful view of the sky and the blue sky is visible from the inside outward. One of the symbols is number 7 - a religious figure. The church of Lakeuden Risti has 7 candle-shaped windows, 7 lamps.

* Did you know that Alvar Aalto had proposed in the plans for the church to be coated with polished black granite. This was partly to be abandoned. The wall of the church was bent from the bricks and slammed into white. However, the lower part of the church walls and the walls of the delivery cabinet were coated with Aalla's proposed black.

* Did you know that the children's section of the Seinäjoki Aalto Library is the first child-sized space designed and made for children in Finland. When designin buildings, Alvar Aalto has always strived for a good, human-sized and humane environment. In addition to the Aalto Library, such a humanity occurs, among others. in the form of benches and chairs, and in the grips of the doors. For example, the church benches are round shaped and have good seating. The doorsteps of the City Hall are special - two overlapping handles. Such smaller people and children can open the door from the bottom line.

* Did you know that the Seinäjoki City Theater was built after Alvar Aalto's death. Its construction moved to a later date, as Seinäjoki needed a new central hospital. The drawings of the Theater House were drawn up in 1968 and were completed by Alvar Aalto's wife Elissa Aalto and the Swiss architect Tide Huesser in 1987. The facade of the building was a light, opaque, ceramic clinker arch. Interior and furnishings are design products designed by Aalto. The theater has four stages: the Alvar Hall (main stage), the Elissa studio, the Verstasteatteri and the theatrical restaurant.

* Did you know that if you look at the buildings of the Aalto Center from the top of the bird's eye view, you can notice that the church building of Lakeuden Risti resembles a chest, the Aalto Library building resembles the opened book and the new Apila Library looks like a glittering magazine.
