Laminated Photographs. First photo. The bug owner has long been an admirer of the paintings of Vermeer, one of the Masters of the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th Century. This painting, entitled "The Lacemaker" is one of the few I haven't seen in person. Having never seen lace produced by anything but machines, I was curious about the shape and function of the implements in the girls hands, but was resigned to never knowing.
Second Photo. In 2010 we were in Bruges, Belgium and happened upon group of elderly women teaching the lacemaking craft to others. And, the implements of Vermeer's girl were identified (bobbins). The photo shows one of the teachers at her work. This is the only photo taken in which her hands were not blurred.
