~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rev. Elijah P. Lovejoy is a Martyr for the cause of Freedom of Speech, Freedom of the Press and Civil Rights. Rev. Lovejoy embraced civil rights during a time when slavery was not only accepted but in a time when few people actually took up the cause. Born in Albion, Maine in 1802, educated at Colby College in Waterville, he then moved to St. Louis Missouri where he became an editor of the local newspaper. There he contributed a column that spoke against slavery and for civil rights for all. He then headed to Alton, Illinois thinking this may be the place to start a newspaper and speak out against slavery. When the pro-slavery residents of Alton realized Rev. Lovejoy's intent, they set about destroying the printing press that the Reverend was attempting to set up. This did not deter Rev. Lovejoy as he simply set out to set up another believing that his right to speak out against slavery should not be interrupted by the pro-slavery factions. During one of the raids intent on destroying the printing press, Rev. Lovejoy was shot and died of his wounds in 1837. This coin is a tribute to a man who history has almost forgotten. The coin will start in a geocache near the Rev. Elijah Parish Lovejoy birthplace and childhood home and hopefully travel cache by cache to the town of his demise. Maybe after the long journey the coin will be returned to Albion, Maine and left in the cellar of his childhood home.
