About This Item

1

Large coin with heft.  1.75 inches 3.75 mm thick 38.6 grams two tone silver with gold. Available in other metal colors. The front of the coin has lots of line and edge work.  The busy compass Rose design has matte, translucent and glitter enamel.  In addition, the background metal texture adds more buzy work.  The reverse has simple, bold 3-D work in two tone colors.  The background metal color is antique silver.  The background metal texture sets off the repeating outer artwork.  The medallion is done in raised gold in the shape of a ship's wheel.  The edge if the coin has the ocoin name and coinsandpins.com. Another very nice compass coin.

Info on the coin: Distributed by Coinsandpins.  Designed by YemonYime.

Captured from a circa 1500s Portuguese map, this compass rose design was found on a map navigating the African coastline. We had the design enhanced by the artist YemonYime to be more visually exciting when minted as a metal image.

The front side has a combination of translucent and glitter colors defining different aspects of the compass. We also added numbers in the outer ring designating the 32 compass points. The backside features an image of a ship's wheel from an actual 1500s ship. This represents the tool used to steer a ship to the correct bearing on the compass.

The 2007 coins were minted in a total of 7 different finishes. They also have the name "Compass Rose 2007" imprinted on the edge of the coin. They are trackable on Geocaching.com and have their own icon.

In 2005, the first Compass Rose Geocoin was released and became a bestseller, also the second from 2006.
So it is not surprising that CoinsAndPins (Aaron Charles Promotions) then put the fabulous amount of 5626 Geocoins on sale in 2007. For the first time, the back of the 44 x 4 mm Geocoin was redesigned with the image of a steering wheel from the 16th century.

The compass rose on the front was based on a Portuguese nautical chart from 1500, which was used for navigation along the African coast. Coin designer YemonYime improved the display to make the compass rose on the coin appear more visually exciting. He used a combination of translucent and glittering colors in imitation hard enamel that define different aspects of the compass. Numbers have also been added to the outer ring to denote the 32 cardinal directions. The name "Compass Rose 2007" and the copyright of the publisher "CoinsAndPins.com" are stamped on the edge of the geocoin.

The 2007 edition was released in a total of 7 different editions: Satin Gold, Black Nickel, Antique Bronze, Polished Gold with Polished Nickel Wheel, Antique Silver with Polished Gold Wheel, a limited edition of 75 pieces in polished nickel with polished gold highlights.
A single coin was produced as a prize for a photo contest in antique copper with polished nickel highlights. The winner later auctioned them off on eBay for a charity.

Thanks to the 2023 Christmas Day blizzard my daughter, JMVonFange, was delayed in heading home so we spent the bonus time together comparing our caching statistics including trackables discovered and looking through our geocaching pictures. JM has discovered significantly more trackables that I have mainly because while we were staying home during the pandemic she spent time online and spotted numerous TBs that were being shared virtually. After looking at the TB page for each TB that she discovered that I didn't, I found that a number of TB Codes necessary to discover the trackable were included on the TB Page itself or intentionally or as a spoiler in the photo gallery. Sometimes there was an attempt to obsure or hide the TB Code that was not entirely successful making it fairly easy to determine the TB Code needed to discover the travel bug.
