About This Item

AMTG Navstar Masters Of Space GC 1

Mid size coin with lots of heft. 1.6 inches 3.5 mm thick silver.  Unusual shape. The front of this coin has excellent 3-D work and very nice dark blue, white and light blue enamel.  The medallion shows a compass rose raised above a globe. Four of the compass points point to satalites. The inner rim is dark blue and has two small metal stars at the west and south points..  The rim is double around the top medallion.  The bottom of the coin has a white enamel banner with raised script that reads  "Navstar GPS". The reverse continues the wonderful enamel work and colors.  The medallion shows a white enamel winged griffin against a drak blue enamel background.  The lower white enamel banner has script that reads "Master of Space".  An excellent coin.

Info on the coin:  As of 2007.  Developed by the United States Department of Defense, it is officially named NAVSTAR GPS (Navigation Satellite Timing And Ranging Global Positioning System). The satellite constellation is managed by the United States Air Force 50th Space Wing. Although the cost of maintaining the system is approximately US$400 million per year, including the replacement of aging satellites, GPS is free for civilian use as a public good.

The 'Masters of Space' and the flying gryphon are the emblems of the 50th Space Regiment.  In 1992 they replaced the inactivated 2nd Space Regiment, and were charged with managing the Navstar Global Positioning System.

So many of my GCs have been muggled that I only release new ones as virtuals. If you do not approve, please leave it in the cache for a cacher who understands. Thanks. GR

Thanks to the 2023 Christmas Day blizzard my daughter, JMVonFange, was delayed in heading home so we spent the bonus time together comparing our caching statistics including trackables discovered and looking through our geocaching pictures. JM has discovered significantly more trackables that I have mainly because while we were staying home during the pandemic she spent time online and spotted numerous TBs that were being shared virtually on various social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, etc. Thankfully, she still had a few notes that helped guide my search for the same trackables that she had already discovered. After looking at the TB page for each of the TBs that she had discovered, I found that a large number all belonged to several individuals and sent a message to them individually inquiring about permission to log their trackables. This travel bug was on the list that you shared with me.
