About This Item

I am a small Portuguese paving stone and I was a player in the first geocaching@pt travel bug race – Homage to the art of Portuguese paving , substituting my sister Calçadinha in this race, which was missing in action in Seychelles. I’ve ended the race in the 14th place and my sister in the 6th.

Whenever you take me for a walk, please take the opportunity to take my picture in front of some of the monuments in your city and particularly in an especially beautiful paved section of your city.

The name “Calçada à Portuguesa” or be it “Paving Portuguese style” has to do with the form of how the individual paving stones are set against each other: the stones are irregular in shape with variable dimensions generally with 5 cm sides. Normally, the pavements are executed in “vidraço”, a type of limestone.

Paving as a craft is believed to have originated in Mesopotamia, where rocky materials were used in the inside and outside of constructions, being later brought to Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome.

The Romans used to pave the vias connecting the empire using materials to be found in the surroundings. Some of the techniques introduced are still applied on the Calçada. Upon a well compacted trench of sandy and argillaceous materials, craftsmen lay a bedding of gravel, which will accommodate the stones, acting as cement.

The Arab presence in the peninsula left traces not only in language, but also contributed to the art of paving.
