Current Goal

Help this little turtle complete its migration to northern California. (Read the story below to find out why this is Dan's LAST bug, and why we really hope it'll make its way back to us someday.)

About This Item

Once upon a time (in 2002), a couple of Dralasites decided to order a pack of 4 travel bugs from the geocaching website. Two tags attached themselves immediately to cute little critters (a sheep and a giraffe) and raced each other to England. The third one met a brave warrior and also went on its merry way soon afterward. But the fourth one, the one you're looking at, was extremely shy and didn't want to go anywhere at all.

We fed and nurtured it patiently, confident that it would soon find its own motivation to leave the nest. But it seemed content to stay with us for the long haul.   Toward the end of summer, our best friend Dan decided to move back to Boston.  We were sad to see him go, but just kind of thought of it as a temporary fix to his recent unemployment problem until the economy picked up again.

We said to our little bug, "Dan's going to Boston. Wouldn't you like to tag along? He'll take good care of you until you decide where you want to go."

"That does sound nice," said the bug with a small smile. "I hear they have good seafood there."

"The best," we replied with a straight face, knowing the bug could only have heard about Boston from us. We had many fond memories of the place, having lived there with Dan a couple years before.

The day of Dan's move finally came, and we tearfully said good-bye to our timid little traveler, whom we weren't sure we'd ever see again.

At our wedding in August (of 2002), we asked Dan about the little bug. "It settled right in at my new apartment.  Seems content to study my clownfish all day, and even gets along with my neurotic new cat Scratchy.  I've been telling it stories about my own travels, hoping something will spark its interest, but nothing's happened so far."

"Sorry, Dan," we laughed.  "Looks like we got you a new pet without meaning to."

"That's okay.  This bug of yours is no work at all."

That was the last time we heard anything about the bug.  We just figured Dan would tell us if anything new had happened.

Dan committed suicide four days after releasing our bug, apparently after it befriended a sea turtle. His departure has been an overwhelming loss to us, and as you can probably imagine, we're really hoping this travel bug will eventually make its way back home.

I have terrible news. I visited Arroyo Caching Trail #16 (GCJX9J) on August 19th, the last reported stopping off point of Dan's Last Bug, and found the cache sabotaged. The turtle was nowhere to be found. I fear he's lost in the wild. 😟

I grabbed this TB from Terrapin Station. It was pretty busy there on this Sunday afternoon so I tried to keep everything pretty stealth. By doing that, I didn't read the note with the bug saying that its goal was to make it to San Francisco until I got back home to L.A. As if that wasn't bad enough, I check out the bugs website and read what it's about. I don't know if I could have felt any worse about taking it. I'm going to place it right away and hopefully it will get back up north soon.

This turtle is alive and kicking!

Today I was in a park in Yorba Linda, California, walking in circles and scratching my head, when a pleasant fellow came up the trail, walking his dog. Noticing my GPSr he stopped to talk to me.

He explained that he had been introduced to geocaching while visiting a friend in Ontario, Canada several months ago and came home with a "toy thing with one of those tags on it." He had bought a GPSr, but somehow never got around to learning how to use it. He knows he should do something about this thing, that it needs to go to another cache, but he can't see himself doing it any time soon and what should he do about it. He added that it needs to get to the Bay Area.

"Well, hand it over!" was my reply. "I know exactly what to do with the little fellow." Well, he explained that it wasn't so little. Not to worry; I know lots of large caches---some of them are mine! And it happens that my daughter and I will be heading for San Francisco for her Spring Break, although that won't be for a few weeks.

After a little discussion, it was decided that Brian would go home to get the travel bug and would return to the park to hand it off to me. I thanked him for his sense of responsibility.

The story of Dan's last bug is a sad one. I can relate as I lost a brother to suicide. However, Dan's travel bug will have a happy homecoming. Maybe Squirt would like to kick around down here before getting a lift north.

Out caching with a friend from California (L.A. area) and this was his first Travel Bug! He's now hooked on caching and when he gets back next week he'll be placing this one as soon as he can.
