To visit the oldest active caches in the US and around the world. If you don't know where any are, just put it into your personal favorite cache, and say why it's your favorite.
On May 1st, 2000, the Clinton administration removed the signal masking from the GPS satellite system called Select Availability. Three days later, on May 3, 2000, Dave Ulmer buried a 5-gallon bucket near Portland Oregon. Within a week, the cache was visited twice and logged once. Mike Teague was the first to find the container. His personal web page listing these containers and their locations was posted at sci.geo.satellite-nav newsgroup. He was contacted in July by Jeremy Irish, who had the idea to build a website dedicated to Geocaching - and the rest is history. Today the site of the first "stash" is marked by a plaque ("Original Stash Tribute Plaque" at GCGV0P). This Travel Bug wants to visit this and other active caches, which have historic significance to Geocaching. Please place the bug in the oldest active cache in your area. It is starting out at the oldest active Geocache east of the Mississippi: "The Spot" (GC39, in Western NY). The Spot was hidden May 26th, 2000. Another goal of this cache is to visit the oldest continuously active cache, "Mingo" (GC30), in Kansas. It was placed less than two weeks after Dave Ulmer's, on May 11th. Also interesting: GC12 placed May 12th in Oregon, and Beverly (GC28), placed May 13th in Illinois.
