This was our first day ever at geocache hunting and this was our very first cache to search for. I heard about this sport about a month ago and checked out the website. I thought this would be a great way to spend time with my oldest son, Dalton, who is five. I didn't have a GPS and didn't really want to spend a lot of money to buy one. As it happens, my brother is in the timber business and he had a GPS in storage that he had never even used. Turned out to be a Magellan 2000. From looking at the manual, it appears the GPS was made in '96 and the docs stated that it was accurate to within 100 meters. I thought, Oh, brother!. But the thing worked great. Got us to within five to ten feet!
We started out the day leaving our home in Dublin at around 8:30AM. Stopped for breakfast and gas, then headed down US 441 to McRae. This cache was somewhat of a challenge for us, probably due my novice ability of reading the GPS. We kept turning down dirt roads and the GPS would tell us we were within 1 mile or 1/2 mile, but we couldn't quite get close enough to get out of the truck and start looking. Finally, we went far enough down US 23 and turned down the right road.
We were excited to find Sir Shaggy in our very first cache. On our fourth, and last cache search of the day, we found another travel bug, Mommy's Bug. Sir Shaggy got to meet Mommy's Bug, and I'll be posting some pictures soon.
We would have left Sir Shaggy at the Soperton Surprise cache, but he and Mommy's Bug talked it over and decided they wanted to come meet the rest of our family. Sir Shaggy will be visiting with us in Dublin for a little while, but we'll be sending him on his way very soon.
I'll post pictures soon.
