Current Goal

Cockroaches live in a wide range of environments around the world. This Travel Bug would like to travel far and wide as its cousins have over the years. He'd even like to get back to Melmac, if you are headed that way.

Dropped Off 9/5/2008 ModelCitizen placed it in USS ALABAMA Alabama - 1.7 miles  Visit Log

There certainly were lots of dark corners for Rodney to hide in onboard the USS Alabama and the USS Drum submarine here at the park today. We spent a while walking through the battleship and submarine and touring the aviation display. The geocache here seems to get visited often so it should be a good jumping-off point for Rodney's continuing adventures. I had a lot of fun with this travel bug and hope you enjoyed reading about it and seeing the pictures.

Blue skies and happy caching!

  • Rodney at one of the USS Alabama's propellers. The battleship had four propellers like this one, each weighing over 18 tons, to deliver the power from the ship's engines that had a total output of 130,000 horsepower.
  • The USS Alabama in Mobile Bay. This battleship is 680 feet in length, over 108 feet wide and 194 feet tall, weighing 45,000 tons (90 million pounds) when battle-ready, and carried a crew of 2,500 men.
  • The view from the bow. The ship is 680 feet long. That's over two football fields long!
  • USS Alabama, looking very intimidating. Ship's armament: Nine 16"/45 caliber (not .45 caliber!) guns in three turrets (accurate to 21 miles), 20 5"/38 cal guns, 48 40mm guns, and 52 20mm guns.
Retrieve It from a Cache 9/5/2008 ModelCitizen retrieved it from Admiral Semmes Alabama   Visit Log

I was in Mobile today on business and finished up too late in the day to make it back to work before quitting time so I hung around Mobile and hunted a few caches.

We started off with a tour of Fort Conde in downtown Mobile, a Revolutionary War-era fort that has been partially reconstructed on its original site. After the fort, it was a short walk to the Admiral Semmes cache and statue where I dipped this traveler. Next stop - the USS Alabama battleship.

I'll be posting pictures.

  • Rodney in the Fort Conde stockade. Rodney was relaxing and chilling out in the stockade until someone turned the light on. Then he ran.

Rodney, a travel BUG in the purest sense, got to go with me today to the Gold Coast Skydivers dropzone in Lumberton, Mississippi to make a few jumps before hurricane Gustav blows in. We rode up to 14,500 feet in the DZ's Super Twin Otter jump plane, hopped out of the door and enjoyed over 70 seconds of freefall at 120 mph or more, deployed the 'chute around 3,000 feet, and had a 5 minute parachute ride before landing softly back at the dropzone. Repacked the chute and repeated three more times.

I was jumping with a couple of co-workers, one of whom recently returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. We jumped out of the plane together, flew to each other, and built some formations in the sky then did some high-speed (180 mph) skydiving by standing up with our arms out in freefall. I even got to do a coach jump with a beginning skydiver on the last jump. It was a great day at the drop zone and ALF's friend Rodney the travel bug was along for the ride!

All in all, the TB racked up another 22 (vertical) miles of travel. Not sure how to log that on the geocaching site. I guess I'll have to wait until Gustav leaves the area before finding a cache to put this TB into.

Now Rodney has experienced the joy and thrill of flight and knows why the birds sing. Check out the pictures I'm uploading with this log.

Blue skies and happy caching!

  • All the TBs and GCs that jumped with me today. Here's all the travel bugs and geocoins that went skydiving with me, laid out on my skydive rig before the first jump of the day.
  • Rodney the cockroach is ready to go! Rodney doesn't even look scared or worried. Let's get on the plane and do this!
  • Here's Rodney, safe and sound after jump #2. This is shortly after landing from jump number 2. Now let's pack that chute and go again!
  • Another load of skydivers takes off at Gold Coast.
  • A tandem pair lands at the DZ.

I actually found Rodney in the Starkville TB/Coin Hotel cache today. In order to keep the TB's travel mileage straight, I'm going to retrieve it from Overlooking God's Country and dip it into and out of the Starkville TB/Coin Hotel cache.
